According to the MVR in baseball, each pitching team is allowed five mound visits per nine-inning game. Extra innings do not carry over any unused visits. The removal of the pitcher from the current game will be enforced if a team exceeds this limit. But if a visit is to protect a pitcher from injury or illness (not because of the need for the reliever to pitch), it does not count against the total.
